Happy 2002 Christmas Greetings and a Healthy, Successful New Year, Friends!

Longer sunny days with azure skies remind us that Christmas has nearly arrived.Itís pleasant to reestablish contact with friends around the world. This year has been a pleasant eventful one, with one overseas trip to Singapore, the excitement of our jobs, the visit of a friend from Canada for a month, regular contact with the Liebecks and considerable work by Lily on the garden.

As in previous years, Lily continues to enjoy being the principal of South Lake Primary School now for her sixth year. Her work remains engaging and sometimes stressful, with the challenge of leadership and solving daily problems and disputes.†† She remains in fine health and enjoys her busy lifestyle. She attended a landscaping course and has planned substantial improvements to the grounds around the house including new fences, a car port, and a French parterre garden.Plans have been approved by council and construction begins in January. In the front garden she keeps busy with a spade, bags of manure and has established a brightly coloured flower garden.

Don turns 56 in January and has again enjoyed a healthy year.He has recently been anxious and annoyed by deteriorating eyesight in his right eye and will be operated upon for a cataract on December 10th.Fortunately, he has normal vision in his left eye.†† He has continued working for his tenth year for Peel District Education Office http://www.eddept.wa.edu.au/deo/peel/index.htm as a psychologist four days a week and continues to enjoy counseling students. This year he completed courses in cognitive behavioural therapy which he uses for depression, anxiety and anger. A slide show he uses with students is on his web page under anger. This is his fifth year at Warnbro Community High School <http://www.warnbro.wa.edu.au> and Port Kennedy Primary School http://www.southwest.com.au/~pkps/ with both schools overlooking the sandy beaches of the Indian Ocean. (Please see this site for a real time surf camera view of our beaches located near our home, shown to the left.) Cottesloe Beach††† (http://perthcam.bankwest.com.au/cott.html)††

Don (VK6DN) continues to chat away happily on 2 meters (amateur radio) during the one-hour drive to and from work.He operates an internet repeater linking system which allows him to link his local Fremantle repeater via the internet to any of 700 repeaters world wide. New repeaters added this year to the IRLP system include South Africa, the UK, Netherlands, Belgium and Sweden. The linking is through a computer with red hat linuxand ADSL broadband connected to a 2 meter radio set to the local repeater frequency. See IRLPhttp://www.irlp.net/ for more information on this world wide system.Follow the link on this page http://www.live365.com/stations/253404 It allows you to listen to IRLP Reflector 920 over the internet to experience repeater linking in real audio.)

Don has also obtained a laptop through the Education Department. He has equipped it with the IEEE 802.11b Orinoco wireless card and set up an access point on his server. He now surfs the net from the back verandah on a laptop by microwave. His next project is to erect an external microwave antenna to join a city wide computer intranet.(Information and a map of users of this network is found at. http://www.e3.com.au/ )

Another new event in Donís life was the purchase of a very fast new electric wheelchair. Sketch by Bill Van WartThis enables Don to get around the neighbourhood and visit local beaches without transferring into and out of his car. Don spent some time this year creating a large web site (HTTP://donpugh.dyndns.org) which runs on his own Apache web server. He emptied four drawers of psychological documents from work, scanned them and placed them online.Donís spare time still continues to be spent on weekly visits to a 15-theatre megaplex to see most of the new release films and regular reading of new release books by his favourite authors. On his day off each Wednesday he continues to meet a group of friends for lunch in a Vietnamese restaurant. The shopping complex with ten shops in Subiaco continues to go well, with mostly reliable tenants, and no empty shops.

This year we have seen the Liebeck family more often than normally. In July, Don and Lily joined Ken and Robyn and their two children, Curtis, 10 and Britt, 7 in a one week trip to Singapore. We all stayed at the Swissotel, (http://www.swissotel.com/) a 70 storey building in the centre of downtown Singapore.Ken and Robyn took a two room suite on the 64th floor with balconies offering sweeping city views. We all had a wonderful time eating out at different ethnic restaurants, prowling the shopping malls, and visiting the Singapore Zoo.We rented a car and drove into Malaysia at Jahor Baru, for a day with the Malaysian ringgit, devalued 2 to 1, making for cheap shopping.Don enjoyed buying computer software for $2.00 per cdrom. We both enjoyed witnessing the kidsí excitement, on their first plane flight, trying new foods and experiencing a large cosmopolitan city.

In early September, Lilyís mother, Alison, was hospitalized during a visit to Perth.Terminal cancers were discovered and she passed away in great pain four days following her admittance. Her funeral was well attended, and she rests with her husband Harold, and son Tim in the Merredin Cemetery. Lily is in the process of selling her motherís Merredin home, after many weekendís work trying to clear it out.We enjoyed the Liebeckís support and company throughout the illness and the house clearing. The year has been tough for them with a severe drought and a very poor wheat crop.

In 2003 Don is taking six months long service leave from work.He has planned a four month trip (his twelth) around the world taking his attendant care worker of eleven years..Donís route with arrival times is attached with his email web address being pugh_don@hotmail.com. He is really hoping to catch up with many friends on this trip and will be phoning in advance to organize meetings. Lily will stay behind to work, but plans a trip somewhere.

With the new house, we have expanded accommodation. We live in a Mediterranean climate with more hours of sunshine than any place on earth with our summersduring Canadian winters. As our friends retire, we urge you to consider an Australian winter holiday. In January, 2002 we welcomed Bill Van Wart from Napanee, Ontario and greatly enjoyed his company.Descriptions of Billís holiday in Perth with photos are on Donís web site. We love getting your correspondence. We hope that this finds you well and best wishes for a happy, healthy, enjoyable and prosperous New Year.

With best regards†††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††††† http://donpugh.dyndns.org/rottnest.htm
